Choices January 2010 : Page 2I) Pamily SELENA IS SHY! Believe it or not, actress Selena Gomez, star of Wizards of Waverly Place, had to overcome stage fright to get the Disney Channel to hire her-and the person she sought to help vanquish her shyness was her mom. "I was 12," Selena, who's now 17, tells Choices. "I had to audi- tion in a huge room in front of 15 executives. I was very shy. My mom helped me overcome that. She helped me realize that acting and sing- ing is what I wanted to do and I should focus on that and not on all these people wearing fancy suits. I ended up booking my own series." Selena advises teens to seek out their parents for advice for overcom- ing problems. "Ask your mom to tell you stories about things she had to overcome when she was your age," Selena says. "That helped me."
