CEO / State Secretary Anne Framroze Vice President/Publisher Nancy Duckworth Banks Art Director Mary Belongia Managing Editor I A Commitment to Diversity have witnessed truly remarkable changes in real estate in my 39-year career. So much is going on at C.A.R., from a popular ad campaign (page 20) to a new initiative that seeks to support women (page 8). Often, I think about my predecessors and how they set the stage for us to be role models. I think about the courageous work of the Women’s Council, for in-Rory Cohen Senior Editor stance. Very few know that a Women’s Division was created in 1924 by the California Real Estate Association. Fourteen years following the group’s inception, the National Association of Real Estate Boards, a predecessor to the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS ® , encouraged a national Women’s Council after seeing what the Golden State had accomplished. These women were advocates for equitable earnings because, as they put it, “commission is commission.” They pushed other women by building bridges, creating powerful networks, and encouraging one another. Indeed, we have come very far. You can learn about the aforementioned program which aims to help women who want to fill leadership positions on page 8. C.A.R.’s Women’s Initiative is looking to build up aspiring female leaders and will create a mentor/mentee program. It’s worth noting that men can be powerful advocates for women, so don’t let your gender hold you back from getting involved. With regard to race and culture, REALTORS ® have become more ethnically di-verse, with a makeup of over 9 percent Asian/Pacific Islanders, 10 percent Latino, and 3 percent African-American of survey respondents in C.A.R.’s last Membership Survey. As a result of these differences, REALTORS ® and brokerages are able to bet-ter serve their communities, transcend language and cultural barriers, and reflect a unique diversity that we hold so dear. The article “Snapshots in Diversity” highlights two brokerages that are committed to diversity. You will note that they have reaped the benefits with high sales volumes and a strong reputation. One of the brokerages in the piece even lists 36 languages in total that are spoken by REALTORS ® that work there—with dialects from Farsi to French! Our unity is constituted in something higher than ourselves—in Man [or woman] ... For no man [or woman] seeks to hear his own echo, or to find his [or her] reflection in the glass.” In “Flight to Arras,” Saint-Exupéry writes of how mer-chants on the way home from “faraway lands used to exchange treasures when they met.” Differences are gifts. And together we are stronger. Vol. 97 | No. 3 ©2017 CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® ISSN: 0008-1450 Geoff McIntosh MAY 2017 • CALIFORNIA REAL ESTATE 3
